Growing old is an inevitable aspect of life for everyone. While this is so, you do not want to show much of it before you get too old. As technology and medicine have advanced in the past few decades, scientists and researchers have created ways to forestall the signs of aging. One popular and effective treatment is Botox.

While aging affects many parts of our bodies, the most affected or visible is the face—specifically, the eyes. When signs of aging start to show in your eyes, they can make the eyes appear tired. They may also form crow’s feet or forehead lines.

What Is Botox?

Botox injections are popular for treating wrinkles and lines on your face. Furthermore, they are also helpful in treating other conditions like lazy eye, an overactive bladder, excessive sweating, and neck spasms. Doctors may also use them to help prevent chronic migraines.

Botox works primarily because of the active ingredient onobotulinumtoxinA. It is a toxin that prevents specific muscles from moving. The toxin is a byproduct of a food poisoning-causing microbe. Since the introduction of Botox for medical use, it has inspired its application in other ways.

How Does Botox Work?

When a doctor injects the toxin into a specific muscle, the toxin works to block certain signals. The most common signals that it affects are those that cause muscles to contract. Because of this outcome, it is commonly used to relax tense muscles temporarily.

When it comes to the face, many wrinkles around the eyes that cause your eyes to look tired are usually contracted. When a doctor injects Botox, the muscles relax, and your eyes look much younger and rejuvenated.

The FDA first approved Botox for treating frown lines in 2002. Later in 2013, it was approved for crow’s feet.

What Other Signs of Aging Does Botox Eliminate?

Over the years, as we smile, frown, and squint, our face forms permanent marks that become more pronounced with age. Since Botox was approved for treating vertical brow lines, doctors have been using it to treat these. It reduces the vertical lines between the brows and the horizontal lines on the forehead.

Crow’s feet or lateral canthal lines refer to the lines that form on the outer parts of the eyes. These lines usually radiate from the eye corners and add to the eyes’ tired look, making you look much older than you are. When you get Botox for crow’s feet, you will notice that you look more relaxed.

Does It Work for Under the Eyes?

Botox is effective for some eye wrinkles that can make you look tired. However, it is only recommended for some signs of aging. Some other signs of aging, like bags under the eyes, require a different approach. According to the American Association of Optometrists, Botox is effective for deep lines and not so much for fine lines.
